College Students and Parents: Take Advantage of Student Discounts

Aug 4, 2016 | Media Center, Press Releases

Students Can Instantly Obtain Discounts through Colleges’ Participation in the National Student Clearinghouse

HERNDON, VA (Aug. 4, 2016) – Now more than ever, students and parents want money-saving opportunities from companies offering student discounts. Students can instantly confirm their eligibility with help from their college and the National Student Clearinghouse, enabling them to instantly qualify for discounts on auto insurance, laptops or other devices, apartment leases, and more.

Student discounts are a great way for families to save money and get ready for the upcoming fall term. According to a recent National Retail Federation survey, 21 percent of parents with college students will use coupons to purchase products and services.

The Clearinghouse provides instant enrollment verifications for student service providers, including those that offer student discounts, like big box retailers, online stores, and more. To keep costs low, these discounters often never contact schools directly. Instead participating retailers and others use the Clearinghouse’s EnrollmentVerify℠ service so they can qualify students immediately. It’s an easy way to help students realize cost savings across a wide range of goods and services, from retail items, like clothing and shoes, to technology and transportation.

Furthermore, students with good grades can obtain a Good Student Discount certificate from their institution and the Clearinghouse. Through the Clearinghouse Student Self-Service℠, qualifying students attending participating colleges and universities can obtain and print anytime a Good Student Discount certificate right from their dorm room to redeem at local retail outlets. Auto insurance companies offer these discounts, for example, because they think that students who get good grades are less likely to get into a car accident.

For students interested in obtaining a Good Student Discount certificate, they should search their institution’s website for eligibility and further details. Examples of participating institutions include: James Madison University, Louisiana State University, New York University and Wichita State University.

“This reliable service provided by the National Student Clearinghouse continues to serve as a great tool for my parents and me,” said Jillian Wright, a junior at James Madison University. “Thanks to the Good Student Discount certificate, I have received a discount on auto insurance every semester at James Madison University.”
