National Student Clearinghouse Appoints Mary C. Chapin as Vice President, Chief Legal Officer
HERNDON, VA, JAN. 6, 2016 – The National Student Clearinghouse announced today Mary C. Chapin as Vice President and Chief Legal Officer to replace Janine Greenwood, who is retiring after 39 years in the legal profession representing education, technology and media companies, including nearly eight years with the National Student Clearinghouse.
“Among the many skills Mary brings to the Clearinghouse, extensive knowledge of data privacy both in the United States and abroad and a firm personal commitment to the protection of the student information entrusted to the Clearinghouse are both foundational and serve to assure that the Clearinghouse continues as the most trusted provider of education services,” said Rick Torres, President and CEO of the National Student Clearinghouse. “She is joining a highly talented and engaged executive leadership team at the Clearinghouse and we look forward to gaining from her perspectives.”
Torres also added, “On behalf of the Clearinghouse Board of Trustees, our entire staff and our stakeholders, I’d like to express my gratitude to Janine for the guidance and advice she has provided our organization to benefit students, colleges and universities throughout the nation and the world. We wish her all the best in retirement.”
During the transition, Ms. Greenwood will continue to work with the Clearinghouse on a part-time basis particularly focused in the areas of data privacy and transparency where she will continue to help inform policy makers about the Clearinghouse’s core commitment to data privacy, security and transparency and our essential services to the K-20 education continuum.
Ms. Chapin, formerly the general counsel of Direct Response Consulting Services, Euro DM Ltd. and Washington Lists, Inc., has 23 years of experience advising domestic and international private and publicly-held corporations and nonprofit organizations. Her expertise includes data management and protection, privacy, regulatory issues, intellectual property, employment law, corporate governance and compliance, cybersecurity, and technology transactions.
Prior to becoming general counsel, Ms. Chapin was a partner in the Intellectual Property, Media and Technology Department of McDermott, Will & Emery LLP, where she represented Fortune 100 companies to emerging growth companies in a broad range of litigation and transaction matters. She is licensed to practice law in Virginia, the District of Columbia, and New York.
She is co-chair of the Litigation Forum for the National Capital Region Chapter of the Association of Corporation Counsel. Ms. Chapin also serves on the boards of directors of NOVACO, Inc. and its parent organization Shelter House, Inc., and the board of Emmanuel Lutheran Preschool.
Ms. Chapin earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law.
