National Student Clearinghouse’s StudentTracker for High Schools Earns iKeepSafe California Badge

May 17, 2016 | Media Center, Press Releases

Herndon, VA , May 16, 2016 – iKeepSafe announced that it will be awarding the California Privacy Badge to StudentTracker for High Schools, a National Student Clearinghouse product. StudentTracker helps high schools and districts gauge the success their graduates have in college, focusing on enrollment, persistence, and completion.

iKeepSafe’s California Privacy Badge is the first independent assessment program specifically tailored to emerging student data privacy legislation, including the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA). The program seeks to help educators and parents in the state of California identify edtech services and tools that protect student data privacy.

“Just like when the National Student Clearinghouse received the very first iKeepSafe FERPA Badge in 2015 and now their California Student Privacy Badge, this recognition continues to demonstrate our commitment to protecting the privacy of K-12 students’ education records,” said Rick Torres, President and CEO of the Clearinghouse. “We hope the California Student Privacy Badge assures high schools and families that StudentTracker® for High Schools is a safe and responsible service that meets the stringent standards put forward by iKeepSafe, California legislators, and other privacy leaders throughout the nation.”

“By undergoing the California Privacy assessment, National Student Clearinghouse has further demonstrated their commitment to student data privacy,” said Marsali Hancock, President and CEO of iKeepSafe. “Because our youth are learning and growing in a digital culture, schools need to ensure that the privacy practices of the tools they depend on have been carefully reviewed. They can now feel confident that StudentTracker meets iKeepSafe’s quality standard of data privacy protection.”

Products participating in the California Privacy assessment must undergo annual re-evaluation to continue displaying the iKeepSafe badge. For the evaluation, an independent privacy professional reviewed StudentTracker, its privacy policy and practices, as well as its data security practices.

About StudentTracker® for High Schools

StudentTracker for High Schools is a unique service designed to help high schools and districts more accurately gauge the college success of their graduates at any college or university in the U.S. StudentTracker’s exclusive access to national postsecondary student records provides reliable, current information about high school graduates’ college enrollment, persistence, and completion.

About the National Student Clearinghouse®

The National Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit formed in 1993, is the trusted source for and leading provider of higher education verifications and electronic education record exchanges, handling more than 1.4 billion education record transactions annually. The Clearinghouse serves as a single point of contact for the collection and timely exchange of accurate and comprehensive enrollment, degree, and certificate records on behalf of its more than 3,600 participating higher education institutions, which represent 98 percent of all students in public and private U.S. institutions. The Clearinghouse also provides thousands of high schools and districts with continuing collegiate enrollment, progression, and completion statistics on their alumni. Through its verification, electronic exchange, and reporting services, the Clearinghouse saves the education community cumulatively over $750 million annually. Most Clearinghouse services are provided to colleges and universities at little or no charge, including enhanced transcript and research services, enabling institutions to redistribute limited staff and budget resources to more important student service efforts. Clearinghouse services are designed to facilitate an institution’s compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, The Higher Education Act, and other applicable laws. The Clearinghouse has signed the Student Privacy Pledge and is the first recipient of iKeepSafe.org’s FERPA compliance badge, which was awarded to its StudentTracker for High Schools service.
